Ipod Touch is now able to access the internet, email, Youtube, iTunes, etc. After the Installation Wizard verifies your current connection, then proceed to disconnect your old router and connect your new router. After cloning the Mac address from the D-Link server (http://192.168.0.1) I was able to configure my router successfully. Insert the CD prior to disconnecting your current router. Since I was switching from one D-Link router to another this is where our experiences may vary.
Kumbha --------------------------------------------------------------------P.S. Another post exclaimed that the Securespot program automatically installs on your computer and eventhough you turn the program off it continually asks for you to sign up for the Securespot service. I'm pleased to say that my 2nd gen. This router does have tons of advance features allowing you to fully customize your LAN and WAN connections. Wireless Device:I upgraded my router because my Ipod wasn't working with my DI-624. etc.
I like you, read almost 3/4 of the reviews here and honestly thought about not purchasing this router. HARDWARE SPECS:OS: Windows Vista 64bitOld Router: D-Link DI-624 2.4GHz Airplus Xtreme Internet connection: Road Runner Hi-speed CableWired accesspointIpod Touch 2nd gen. My Internet connection continued to show that it was not connected and rightly so. VERY IMPORTANT: Now since I didn't click on the Securespot button on the left hand margin of the Installation Wizard and turned off the Securespot from the D-Link server (http://192.168.0.1), my PC is Securespot free. Because my password wasn't recoginized I was forced to restart my PC with the new router in place and rerun the Installation Wizard again. At this point I was asked for my "admin" password, which after entering, wasn't recoginized-but don't worry. Now for the second hurdle. D-Link allows you to continue configuring your new router without setting up a password.
Although I've been using this router for only a couple of hours now let me tell you my experience. The change is slightly noticable but remember, this is straight out of the box-there's room for improvement. etc. So just remember to not click on the Securespot tab within the Installation Wizard and to checkoff the Securespot button from the D-Link router server and you'll be fine. After restarting the PC, the Wizard was able to complete the configuration successfully.
This router does do a couple of things that other reviewers have previously mentioned, such as your Internet connection dropping in Mbps straight out of the box and without any tinkering. I have this router at 2.4Ghz with 20mhz bandwith and my Ipod surfs the web perfectly. One post talked about how the Securespot program that comes with the router "hijacks" your computer like a terrorist, causing an unbearable continual annoyance. Although Apple claims the Ipod Touch only works on 5Ghz internet connections, I'm happy to report that isn't the case. after the switch. To alleviate the dip in connection speed make sure the QoS Engine is disabled. For full disclosure sake, I gave 3/5 stars for reliability b/c I'm unable to comment on that at this given time. After the switch, it is now running at a meager 2.2Mbps-that's with the advanced DNS protection turned off.
First off, do as directed. This review however does not reflect the USB port, SharePort Technology or 5Ghz connection performance. I've yet to clone the Mac address to the router and restart both the modem and router simultaneously. My connection prior to the switch was running around 4.7-5.1Mbps (running Road Runner hi-speed cable)using the D-link DI-624 Airplus Xtreme G model-which operated as advertised. Disabling that will dramatically increase your connection speed. Make sure the "Enable Traffic Shaping" option, under the QoS Engine option from the left margin under the Advanced tab is left unchecked.
You now must do this every time your IP address changes. The SecureSpot "feature" comes automatically turned on. You have to either turn it off or pay for it. The only fix is to then go into the router's controls, turn SecureSpot on, save, then turn it off and save. This single "feature" kills the product. If you choose to try it out but then decide not to buy it and turn it off, at some point it will begin to high-jack your browser and direct you to a page on SecureSpot's maker's website for you to register the device with their service.
If you are willing to pay a monthly fee for your router, by all means, buy this router. Unless you pay for SecureSpot, only the first 30 days are free. Serious pain. The problem. Once you turn off SecureSpot you can no longer sign-in to register your device. If not for SecureSpot this would be a 5 star review.
If you buy it, immediately go in to the settings and turn off SecureSpot and never turn it on nor sign up for the service.
It was much easier to install than the more expensive Linksys was and I'm not bothered by the continual notification pop-ups that the Linksys displayed, even for the two desktops that are wired. I had been experiencing problems maintaining connections with my Linksys N router that was only about 2 years old. Can't say how long this one will last, but so far I'm very pleased with the ease of setup and the performance. It finally stopped working so I had to get a new router fast. Found this one at a local office supply store and installed it with no problems at all. Doesn't hurt that it was roughly half the price of the earlier router.
I ran it from my PC laptop, and a mix of Macs and PCs are all able to access the net at blazing speed. I'm the guy everyone in my family calls when computers need fixing. For months now, this unit has been trouble-free. This wireless router was very easy to set up, and covers our whole house. The one thing you DON'T want to do is skip running the setup disk first, as they tell you to do in the instructions. I like the ability to tweak parameters by accessing the router from the web. I've had several D-Links over the years, and they have been very reliable.
My advice, pass on D-link and find a more user friendly brand. I tried checking at the D-link web site to download the CD software, but finding on their web site as a download was equally impossible.
I was never actually able to get it setup and running. This thing was a huge pain to install.
I've tried on different PC, but still no joy. I've got a Lenovo laptop PC with a DVD drive.
When I inserted the CD to install the wireless router, my PC wouldn't recognize the install CD. This thing is going back to the store tomorrow and I'm looking for another brand wireless router.
No one needs this kind of aggravation when setting up a device.
